LADIES WORK FOR EAST KENT FREEMASONARY
Sally Saunders and Helen Stevens are two
embroiderers who live and work in Kent and Sussex. Both were
trained at the Royal School of Needlework, where they are
now tutors, and also hold embroidery classes in the south
eastern area. They have worked together on numerous commissions
for Church embroideries, and many Masonic banners for East
Kent Lodges
Their exquisite work can be viewed on various
banners.which include the General Gordon, Millennium Mark,
Freedom, Beamish, Mark Stewards, William Russell, Birchington,
Loyal and True, and the Manor of Chatham Mark.
In 1993 Sally worked with Imogen Stuart from
the Victoria and Albert Museum to produce the book ‘Classic
Needlework’ and, in 1998, was asked to write a book
for the Batsford press entitled ‘Royal School of Needlework
Embroidery Techniques’, both of which enjoyed long print
runs. When Helen is not embroidering, she designs and makes
jewellery.
Both have great experience in meeting the needs
of Lodges, and always offer a very personal service, from
design to the completion of new banners. They also possess
long experience in providing expert advice on the repair and
conservation of old banners.
Their work is of a very high professional standard,
hand executed at every stage, and they are always happy to
discuss the working of a new banner. New banners take a minimum
of three months to complete, but Lodges must be aware that
all designs MUST go to Grand Lodge for final approval before
work can commence.
